SAM NOBORU OKINAGA
SAM NOBORU OKINAGA 88, of Honolulu, died December 31, 2014. He was born in Honolulu and graduated fromMcKinleyHigh School and the University of Hawaii.Among otheractivities, Sam was active on the student newspaper staff as an editor.After graduation, he worked as a reporter.Hethen worked forState Savings & LoanAssociation for many years and retired as its Chairman.Throughout his career, he assisted and served in leadership positions on numerous community organization boards and government committees: University of Hawaii Foundation, Kuakini Hospital, Aloha United Way, Council of Social Agencies, Council of Campfire Girls, Friends of the Library, Japanese Junior Chamber of Commerce, Japanese Chamber of Commerce, State Council of Revenues, Federal Judiciary Selection Commission, Commission on the American Bicentennial Celebration, Commission on the Status of Women, Friends of Sparky Matsunaga,andCitizenship Day Committee. Sam's wife, Genevieve (Genny) Okinaga, was his lifetime partner for 61 years, and throughout her life, she shared the same commitment to family and our community. He is survived by son, Garner Okinaga; daughter, Mia Okinaga;brother, Lawrence Okinaga (wife Carolyn); grandson, Samsun Okinaga (wife Tia); 3 great grandchildren, Caelan, Gwen, Sam; and dog, Koko. A celebration of his life service will be on March 7, 2015 at Manoa Valley Church. Visitation: 10:30 am: Service: 11 am. Aloha attire. Please no flowers; contributions will be shared between the Hawaiian Humane Society and Manoa Valley Church.
