EDITH TAMAYO MIYAHARA January 2, 1928 - May 13, 2015 Edith Tamayo Miyahara of Honolulu passed away peacefully at Hi'olani Care Center at Kahala Nui Senior Living on May 13, 2015. Edith was born in Kau, Hawaii, to Mojihei and Seki Kawakami Miyahara. Her priority was education. Edith graduated from Honolulu Business College in 1952; received certification as a practical nurse in 1954; earned her Bachelors of Education in 1957; received a Teachers College Five-Year Diploma in 1958 (Kindergarten - Grade 1 certificate); and was awarded the Masters in Education in 1969. Edith was with the Department of Education for over 30 years, teaching at Kauluwela (1958-1960), Nimitz (1960-1965) and Palolo Elementary School (1965 until retirement). In her desire to have many of life's experiences, she also took ballroom dancing lessons. While teaching, Edith's vision began to fail her. She lost her eyesight during the last few years of her life. She had assistance through the years from close friends, Catholic Charities, Ho'opono Services for the Blind, Senior Companion Services and Project Dana Volunteers. She was well cared for by the professional staff at Hi'olani. Services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 28, 2015, at Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin, 1727 Pali Highway; visitation from 3:00 p.m. Casual attire. No flowers or monetary offerings.
