JERRY TARUTANI
JERRY TARUTANI JEROME MITSUTO TARUTANI of Honolulu led a full life and passed away peacefully in Nu'uanu Valley on April 7, 2015 at the age of 95. Jerry was born in Kalihi on December 23, 1919 as the youngest child of Sutejiro and Masayo Tarutani of Hiroshima, Japan. He grew up playing sports at Palama Settlement and graduated from St. Louis College in 1938. Jerry began his professional career as an auditor with Castle and Cooke and retired from Theo H. Davies as a Freight Sales Manager. After retirement, he remained active as a consultant for Asia and Pacific business endeavors. Jerry studied judo under Dr. Yoshikuni and Professor Okasaki and served as one of the founding Directors of the American Jujitsu Institute. As a master instructor, Jerry taught judo for over 35 years to hundreds of students at the U.S. Naval Submarine Base at Pearl Harbor, and at Palama Settlement. Jerry was always an active member of the community, volunteering his time to numerous organizations including, Aloha United Way, the Catholic Church, Boy Scouts of America, several Parent Teacher Associations and as a member of the Palama Settlement Board of Trustees. In 1998, he was proceeded in death by his first wife and mother of his children, Mary Judith Tarutani (Cantrell). He is survived by his second wife, Hideko Tarutani (Iikubo), 5 children, and 12 grandchildren. His children include Michael (Mary), Matthew (Barbara), Marc (Jennifer), Mary (Mike) Botha and Melanie (Sam) Russell. His grandchildren include Andrew (21), Anna (19), Maria (16), Matthew (14), Ashleigh (12), Avery (11), Pierce (8), Mitchell (8), Anthony (7), Abigail (4), Lorel (4) and Malia (3). Private Service.
