FAMILY PLACED OBITUARY

Helen Erna Nieman MacBride
HELEN ERNA NIEMAN MACBRIDE Age 98, passed away peacefully at her home on January 23, 2016. She was born on February 21, 1917 in Honolulu, T.H., the third child of Ernest and Anna Nieman and was educated at Punahou School, University of Hawaii and Yale University School of Medicine. She was instrumental in the establishment of Hawaii's first Blood Bank in 1941. In 1943 she married naval aviator Lt. Bruce S. MacBride, USN of Montclair, NJ who later flew for Hawaiian Airlines for over 32 years. Their marriage lasted for over 55 years and they had an inseparable closeness as a couple. Helen touched countless lives as a biology teacher for Punahou School (1954-1971). In 1980 she formed an Alzheimer's Disease support education group which lead to the establishment of the Aloha Chapter, Alzheimer's Association in 1982. She was an active member of the Waiokeola Congregational Church, UCC since 1958. She is survived by her sons, Dr. Steven MacBride (Valerie) of Honolulu and Michael MacBride (Virginia) of Bellingham, WA; 2 grandchildren, Deanna Tasaka (Ross) and Leland Reames of Honolulu;and 3 great grandchildren, Joseph, Riley and Ainsley. A memorial service will be held at Waiokeola congregational Church, 4705 Kilauea Ave., Honolulu on Saturday, February 20th at 10:00 AM,to be followed by a reception at the church. On Tuesday, February 23rd at 11:30 AM an Inurnment Ceremony will be held at Punchbowl National Ceremony. The family suggests that gifts in Helen's memory may be sent to Waiokeola Church, Punahou School, Alzheimer's Association-Aloha Chapter or the Hawaiian Humane Society.
