Haruko “Helen” Toyama
HARUKO HELEN TOYAMA March 22, 1924 - January 1, 2016 Haruko "Helen" Toyama , 91, passed peacefully the morning of January 1, 2016. Born March 22, 1924 in Honolulu to Yoshio and Kama (Azama) Higa. She was the eldest of nine children .Haruko married Kosuke "Fred" Toyama on December 12, 1943. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2003. Haruko worked at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel and retired from the Moana - Surfrider Hotel in 1988 after 38 years as a waitress serving kamaaina, visitors and celebrities at the world famous Banyan Court. After retiring, she received her GED and her Associate Degree at Honolulu Community College for social work. She volunteered at Family Services and the Pearl City library. Haruko was an active member of Kaimuki Evangelical Church in Palolo Valley where she lived for over 50 years. Also was a member of Pearl City Community Church when she moved to Pearl City with Kosuke in 2002. She is survived by son Earl (Julia) Toyama, daughters Bianca (Myron) Tamura, Freda Young, (Patrick Diebold), grandchildren Brandon Young, Bryan (Jennie) Tamura, Kristie (Larin) Masuoka, Brent (Belinda) Toyama, Jessica (Blaine) Watanabe, great grandchildren Tanner and Brady Masuoka, Ava Toyama, Taya Watanabe. Also survived by brother George (Naomi) Higa, sisters Lillian Ishihara, Rose (Sadao) Shimabukuro, Betty Sakamoto, Edna Wong, Donna (Henry) Lee and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Her brothers Richard and Alfred Higa predeceased her. Services will be held on Saturday Feburary 20, 2016 at Mililani Mortuary Mauka Chapel-Waipio. Visitation 5:00 pm, Service 6:00 pm. In honoring her wishes, no flowers or monetary gifts. Donations may be made to your favorite charity or in her memory to the Alzheimer's Association, Aloha Chapter, 1130 N. Nimitz Hwy., #A-265, Honolulu, HI 96817.
