John Arthur Holmes, 87, of Hilo, a self-employed handyman and an Army veteran who served in the Korean War, died in Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home. He was born in Clinton, Iowa. He is survived by wife Charlotte; sons Stephen and Daniel; daughters Kathleen Grogg, Julie Hahn, Tere Chandler and Karyn and Amanda Doty; sister Edith Knee; and 10 grandchildren. Services: 4:30 p.m. Feb. 20 at Church of the Holy Apostles, 1407 Kapiolani St., Hilo. In lieu of flowers, donations suggested to Church of the Holy Apostles or Hospice of Hilo.
