John M Kerr Jr.
JOHN M KERR JR. John was born on April 13,1932 in Honolulu, Hawaii to John and Nancy Notley Kerr. In Third grade he transferred from public school to Punahou School where he graduated in 1950. He was extensively involved in baseball but especially football in which he excelled. Upon graduation, he and several others of his classmates attended Pasadena City College. The following year, he transferred to Purdue University on a football scholarship, majoring in Physical Education. He was nominated all-star second string by a college sports magazine. He also attended ROTC at Purdue. He entered the Army at the rank of Lt. 1st and joined the 82nd airborne division. After his 2 years of service, he taught PE in Indiana. Returning to Hawaii in 1960 he taught and coached at Punahou and St. Louis High Schools. In 1964, he moved to Merrill, OR where he taught and coached at Merrill High school. During these summers, he attended Oregon State University on a National Science Foundation Scholarship to obtain his masters in Science. He taught at Henley High School from 1970 to 1975 when he moved to the Big Island of Hawaii. In 1995, he was given the "O" man award by Punahou School for his contributions to the school and community. He taught at Konawaena High School, Hale Oponopono, and became a Vice Principal at Kealakehe Intermediate. In 1996, he and his wife, moved back to Merrill, Oregon to retire. He began writing memories from his youth, short stories for children, and published a book about the 1949 Punahou Football team entitled "Team Magnificent." He was active in the Klamath County Retired Educators, Kitchen Band, and belonged to the Hawaiian Unit of Special Forces. In 2012, he moved to Yuba City, CA to be near family. He is survived by his wife, Priscilla, sons, John Kerr III , Monmouth Oregon, Kimo Kerr, Yuba City, CA, Kia Kerr, Moreno Valley, CA , daughter, Jan Oneill, Fort Collins, CO., and nine grandchildren.
