He is survived by a his father, brother, 2 sisters, 3 sons and a grandson. He received his PhD from the University of California at Berkeley in 1973 and was appointed to the University of Hawaii that same year. He retired from the University of Hawaii in 2010. His work in advanced areas of Mathematics is internationally recognized. Dr. Bleecker was a brilliant man. He was, as we all are, first, human with all the foibles and difficulties that presents. And, in the words of another mathematician "In the broad light of day mathematicians check their equations and their proofs, leaving no stone unturned in their search for rigor. But, at night, under the full moon, they dream, they float among the stars and wonder at the miracle of the heavens. They are inspired. Without dreams there is no art, no mathematics, no life." Michael Atiya (Notices of the AMS, 2010). Services for Dr. Bleecker will be held on Thursday, April 21, 2016 at the Valley of The Temples - upper chapel at 12:30 p.m. More information about services available through The Caregiver Foundation 808-625-3782
