Robert T. Kubo
$nameROBERT T. KUBO Robert T. Kubo, renowned Aikido master and retired Castle High School teacher, passed away on April 18, 2016. He was affectionately known as "Bob", Sensei, and Shihan. Kubo Sensei established Kailua Aikido Club in 1963. In 2013 he celebrated the dojo's 50th anniversary. He also established Aikido of Hawaii International (AHI) and was Chairman and Chief Instructor of the organization. AHI includes dojos in Florida, Baltimore, Colorado, Pittsburgh, Orange County (California), San Diego (California), 5 clubs in Nebraska, and Kailua Aikido Club. He also is closely affiliated with dojos in Canada, Europe, and Japan. Kubo Shihan was promoted to 8th dan by Doshu Ueshiba of the Aikikai Foundation (Aikido headquarters) and is one of only two non-national Japanese individuals to be awarded that rank in Hawaii. He is survived by wife Eva E. Kubo, sons Todd Kubo, M.D., J.D. (Tomoko Denton); Jason Kubo (Charalyn Tanaka); and daughter Kellyn (David) Okabe. He is also survived by grand- children Jake, Gianna, and Jaylin. Hanai brothers Yasuo (Yasuko) Kobayashi - Tokyo, Japan; Kazuo (Machiko) Igarashi - Tokyo, Japan; and Bishop Dean Z. Okimura. Hanai sister Yoshie (Masahiko) Ozaki - Tokyo, Japan. Funeral services will be held at Hosoi Garden Mortuary on Monday, May 9, at 6:00 p.m. Visitation will begin at 4:30 p.m. Casual attire. No flowers.
