MELVYN KAZUO SAKAGUCHI
$nameMELVYN KAZUO SAKAGUCHI Melvyn Kazuo Sakaguchi, 77, passed away at his Hilo home on June 16, 2016. Mel was born and raised in Honolulu, the son of Akira and Fumiko Sakaguchi. He was a graduate of Roosevelt High School and the University of Hawaii at Manoa where he held student leadership positions. He completed a Doctorate in Educational and Public Administration from the University of Florida (Gainesville) where he was a National Kellogg Foundation Fellow. For twenty-five years Mel served in a variety of administrative positions for the UH Community Colleges. He was the first Dean for Educational Services at Windward Community College when it first opened, the Provost at Leeward Community College, and Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, Community Services and International Programs for the UH Community College System. After retirement from public education, he continued to work with international students, serving as Dean at Hawaii Tokai International College (Honolulu). Since his retirement from higher education administration, he served as a financial supporter and pro bono advisor to numerous education related projects in Vietnam and Indonesia. He touched countless lives and inspired many future leaders. He is survived by his wife Sandra of Hilo and brother Donald (Judie) of Aiea. Memorial services will be held at the Palolo Hongwanji in Honolulu on Friday, July 22, 2016 with visitation at 3pm and Funeral service at 4pm. Reception to follow. No flowers please.
