JOHN MERRIMAN BAIN John Merriman Bain, aged 72, left this earth on Sunday, May 29, 2016 surrounded by friends and family at his home in Waimea Bay on the North Shore of Oahu. John was born on December 19, 1943 in Cape Town, South Africa. His father, Donald Bain, was renowned for a ground- breaking study of the history of the San people (Bushmen). His grandfather, Thomas Charles John Bain, and great-grandfather, Andrew Charles Geddes Bain, revolutionized transportation routes throughout South Africa in the 17th century. John was educated at the prestigious Reed's School in England, of which Queen Elizabeth is a patron. He went on to become a graphic and fine artist, and worked in New York City in the 1960's, before making Hawaii his home. John spent his life painting the often unseen story of Oahu's North Shore. He created a series of surfboard portraits, concert posters, t-shirt art, the iconic Da Hui logo, and hand painted signs for establishments throughout the community. John was loved for his quick-witted humor, generosity, and knowledge of history and culture. He was a loyal friend. He is survived by his half-sister, Judy Orpen, nephews Neil and Iain Orpen, niece, Frederika Bain, and Tigger cat. A memorial paddle out and service will be held on Sunday, December 18, 2016, at Waimea Bay on the eve of what would have been his 73rd birthday.
Our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased
