Margaret “Marti” L. McGurk
AGE 65, OF HONOLULU, HAWAII passed away on November 22, 2016. She was born, and spent her childhood, in Montana. Marti graduated from Bellevue High School in Washington, and the University of Washington, with a degree in English Education and a minor in history. After college, she moved to Honolulu where she met and married her husband of 40 years, Robert "Bob" E. McGurk. They have two children, Mathew "Matt" R. McGurk and Meghan D. McGurk. Marti loved intellectual pursuits and shared that love through her work with the Hawaii State Department of Education. She taught English at Castle High School for most of her 37-year career, but also worked as a vice principal, resource teacher, and data coach. Marti was passionate about teaching writing, and served as a co-director and a board member of the Hawaii Writing Project. An avid learner, she obtained her Masters of Business Administration from UH Manoa in 1991. She enjoyed reading, attending book club, walking, swimming, and vacationing at her beloved family cabin in Montana. She will be remembered for her quick wit, intellect, writing talent, work ethic, athletic abilities, and her strong love of family and friends. She is survived by her husband, Bob; son, Matt; daughter-in-law, Allison; daughter, Meghan; grand-daughter, Kyla; her brothers and sisters-in-law, Jeff and Deanna Isbister, and Kevin and Andy Isbister; her sisters and brother-in-law, Debby and Don Morgan, and Kim Ferraro; her mother-in-law, Josephine McGurk, brother and sister-in-law, Daniel and Christine McGurk; and nieces and nephews, Michael, Brenna, Caitlin, Casey, Sarah, Adam, Kate, Kari, and James Logan, as well as many friends. Marti was very loved and will be missed tremendously. A celebration of her life will be held on Sunday, December 18, 2016 at 4 pm at the Kalama Beach Club in Kailua.
