Known by all his family as Chic or Uncle Chic, Arthur Joao passed away peacefully at Aloha Nursing Rehab Centre in Kaneohe on December 12, 2016. He was born to Raymond F. Joao and Gussie Iaea Joao on January 20, 1923, on Molokai Ranch. He later attended St. Louis School. Arthur fought in the Battle of the Bulge as an infantryman, and he was fond of saying they walked all the way across Europe to the Russian border. His football career included being an All Star halfback on the 1941 St. Louis football championship team. After the war he was a Federal firefighter until his retirement in 1977 at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Later he worked at the State Airports Division for five years. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Betty. His seven children: Raymond "Buzz" Joao (Millie) of Kailua; Caroline Macy "Dilly" Joao (deceased); Jill Ann Young (Ronald) of Cherry Valley, California; Patrick P. "Dutch" Joao (Patty) of Houston, Texas; Jody F. Schooley (Steve) of Chandler, Arizona; and Michael and Tommy Joao (both deceased). His sister Helen Apana of Molokai is the last of his siblings. The others were Florence Raphael, Raymond "Sonny" Joao, Isaac Joao, Walter Joao, Dorothy Dudoit, and Lawrence "Brother" Joao. As he wished, private services were held.
Our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased
