Kiyoshi Ohbe
94, passed away Saturday, November 19th, 2016, at the Kuakini Medical Center following a brief illness. Kiyoshi is predeceased by his parents, Seikichi and Tama Ohbu, his younger brother Hideo Ohbu, and his wife, Kazuko Ohbe. He leaves behind his older sister, Hatsue Kuwana, three daughters, Michiko (Shigeru) Sugawara, Yasuyo (Tokiteru) Nagoya, and Irene (Dean) Ohbe-Arakaki, seven grandchildren, and four great- grandchildren. Born in Mito City, Japan in 1922 as the 3rd of 4 children, Kiyoshi graduated from Yokohama National University with a bachelor's degree in Economics and Business Management. Kiyoshi started working at the Mitsui Bank's Tokyo branch in 1942, working in their International Banking Department, where he advised and helped to open branches in Thailand, Laos, and Burma. He also traveled extensively throughout Asia and California for Mitsui Bank. He married Kazuko in 1949. She was a loving and supportive housewife, who took care of their home so he could focus on his career. In 1959, Kiyoshi participated in an International Banking seminar sponsored by Dr. Henry Kissinger at Harvard University. He was one of three participants who passed the nation-wide test in Japan to participate in this seminar. In 1961, he was sent by Mitsui Bank to City Bank of Honolulu in Hawaii. While his retirement from Mitsui Bank took place in 1974, his affiliation with City Bank continued until his retirement in 2003 after 42 years of service. Kiyoshi loved working with people and being active in the Japanese community. He served as a member of the HJCC, United Japanese Society of Hawaii, Soto Mission and other organizations. In 2001, he was decorated with the Japanese Emperor's Medal for his service within the Japanese community. Kiyoshi enjoyed singing kouta and karaoke, studying Buddhist history, and soroban (Japanese abacus). He loved his grandchildren and worked hard to provide for his family. We'd like to thank Gail Tamura, Janneth Black, and the staff at Jan's Hanai for providing loving care during his final years with dementia. Arrangements Provided By: HOSOI GARDEN MORTUARY
