Lawrence “Mitch” “Nui” Francisco, Sr.
Mr. Lawrence "Mitch" "Nui" Francisco, Sr., 84, of Hawi, Hawaii, died January 4, 2017 at North Hawaii Community Hospital. Born in Honaunau, Hawaii on April 9, 1932. A graduate of Kohala High School he went on to serve in the Korean War as an Ammunition Foreman with the 100th Ordnance Battalion (ROKA) where he received a Bronze Service Star Medal, a Merit Unit Commendation, UN and National Defense Service Medal's. He was a retired engineer from the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, a boiler technician for the former Kohala Sugar Plantation and a Hawaii County Police Reserve Officer. Well known for his musical talent, he worked briefly as a promotional entertainer for Hawaiian Airlines, was one of the founding members of Kohala's Cosmo Combo Band and later went on to manage The Cherry Brothers Band. He was a member of the ILWU, Disabled American Veterans (DAV), and American Legion. Family and friends may call between 6 to 9 p.m. January 27, 2017 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on 55-337 Akoni Pule Hwy in Hawi. Visitation resumes at the church from 8 to 9:30 a.m., January 28, 2017, to be followed by Eulogy at 9:30 a. m., funeral mass at 10 a.m. and burial at Hawi County Cemetery. The family requests casual attire worn, no flowers. He is survived by his wife, Victoria Francisco of Hawi; sons, Lawrence (Becky Pilapil) Francisco, Jr., of Hawi, Kelly Francisco of San Jose, CA, Karl (Laura) Francisco of Los Angeles, Sean (Ally) Francisco of Seattle, WA; daughters, Lavana (Cederick Raymond) Francisco of Honolulu, Vonn Tenn of Denver, CO; brother, John (Brenda) Francisco of Gardena, CA; sisters, Angie (Hans Peter) Hager of Kamuela, and Maile (Ed) Sprick of New Franklin, MO; 13 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
