Charles Thomas Dixon
Charles Thomas DixonCharles Thomas Dixon, 88, was born on May 17, 1928 and died on Thursday, January 12, 2017 from complications of the flu. He grew up in Baltimore, the oldest son in a family of 12 children. He enlisted in the Navy in the 1940's and moved his young family to San Francisco in the 1950's, where he worked as a bus driver. In 1967 Charles became a radio officer with the Maritime Merchant Marines, a position he held unit his retirement in Hawaii in 1999 where he had lived with his wife since 1986. He was an independent thinker and philosophical man who valued honesty from a young age. A lifelong learner, Charles studied and developed an appreciation of languages through his extensive travels. One of his many accomplishments was how skillfully he transitioned through the changing technologies from morse code to digital communication by earning two degrees in computer science. An avid reader and strong believer in exercise, Charles could often be seen riding his bicycle around Honolulu. He is survived by his wife of 31 years Mary T. Dixon; daughters Renie Ananda (Prijadi), Clairemonica Figueroa (George), Nadine and Guia Dixon; sons Marc, Julian and Neal Dixon; brothers Arthur Dixon (Velma) and Ronald Dixon; sisters Dolores Watson, Ellen Gonsales (Pablo), Gertrude Sherman and Cyanthia Maddox; six grandchildren, four great- grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Charles was stepfather to Henry Rausch (Janet), William Rausch (Katherine), Mary Kay Orr (Scott), Steven Rausch (Mary), ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Charles' body has been donated to the John A. Burns medical school, UHM. Memorial services will be held in Baltimore this summer and San Francisco. Donations may be made to the Salvation Army.
