FAMILY PLACED OBITUARY

Mitsuo “MITS” Uchibori
Mitsuo 96 and a lifetime resident of Kailua, passed away November 27, 2016, in his home surrounded by family. He was born February 25, 1920 in Chinatown, Honolulu to parents Sekiji and Konami Uchibori, who immigrated from Hiroshima, Japan to work on the major irrigation project of Puunene plantation on Maui. At the age of 5, the family moved to Kailua to farm. Mits attended Central Intermediate and graduated from McKinley High School where he was Vice President of Future Farmers of America. Mits was one of the founders of Koolau Farmers Co-op, which was organized to warehouse and distribute vegetables and fruits to the merchants of Honolulu. During the war he played a pivotal role in supplying much needed fresh produce to island residents and communities. Years later Ko'olau Farmers Co-op privatized and now has 4 stores islandwide. Mits was known in the community as the district dealer for the Honolulu Advertiser. In his early years with the paper he managed an area from Waimanalo to Kahuku. He was active in real estate, enjoyed traveling, coin collecting and was an avid golfer; scoring three holes in one. As an active and devoted member of the Kailua Church of the Nazarene, his greatest joy was to be surrounded by friends and family. In most recent years, he enjoyed meeting folks on his daily jaunts around Kailua town on his mobility scooter. He could often be spotted at Kailua Beach and the various shops around town. Mitsuo Uchibori was preceded in death by his wife Yaeko "Violet" Akamine and son Roger, brothers Harold and Masato and sisters, Nobuko Sumida, Margaret Tanna and Helen Choi.
