FAMILY PLACED OBITUARY

LAWRENCE “LARRY” TERUMASA FUKUNAGA
LAWRENCE 87, of Honolulu passed away on February 10, 2017 in Honolulu, surrounded by his family and close friends. He was born on June 26, 1929, in Honolulu. He was the man behind "The Ebb Tides." Founder, Entertainment Director, owner and musician. The Ebb Tides were a mainstay from Kahala to Waikiki hotels from the 1960's to the 2010's. Many local entertainers have walked through the portals of the Ebb Tides, the likes of Gabe & Norman Baltazar, Betty Lou Taylor, George & Noel Okimoto, Benny Saks, Arthur Lyman, Ethel Azama, Billy Hew-Len, Byron Yasui, Paul Mark, Bruce Hamada, Ben Vegas, Carol Kai, Melveen Leed, Ed Kenney, and Tomo Fukui, who was a fellow musician and partner at Metro Music Studio. Several of Hawaii's local sumo celebrities such as Jesse "Takamiyama" Kuhaulua, Saleva`a "Konishiki" Atisanoe and Chad "Akebono" Rowan always called Larry to have the Ebb Tides entertain at their gatherings. Larry also was an active musician at Diamond Head Theatre, Flower Drum Song, and other shows; backed up many stars when they performed in Honolulu - Glenn Campbell, Bobby Darin, Johnny Mathis, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., Andy Williams, Liza Minelli, Rod Stewart, Michael Jackson, Miyoshi Umeki, and many more. He was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award along with Peter Moon in 2008 by the Music Foundation of Hawaii; nominated for Senior Volunteer Award 2007. He was mentored by Dr. Arthur Harvey, and served on the Board of Sounding Joy Music Therapy. In recent years, he has been teaching seniors ukulele and was passionate about his Music Therapy Ministry, a legacy left him by Dr. Harvey, and every weekend entertained with other Ebb Tides members at retirement and nursing homes around Oahu. He is survived by his wife, Amy; son, John; daughters, Clairelane (Bernard) Yoshioka; Lawrie (Susumu) Ikeda; Janice (Kevin) Kekoa; Kris McMahon; Tammy (Frank Jr.) Fasi; 9 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; and his sister, Jean Kimata. Visitation: 5:00 p.m.; Service: 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 2, 2017 at Hosoi Garden Mortuary. No flowers. Aloha Attire.
