ANNA SUGAI
Anna Sugai, age 88, passed away Monday, January 30, 2017 at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. She was born August 18, 1928 in Hanau, Germany. She attended the Goldschmiederschule in Hanau. During the military occupation, right after World War II, she met a young Japanese-American soldier, Gilbert Minoru Sugai. It was a magnificent melding of cultures and history. They were married September 4, 1948 at Schloss Philippsruhe, Hanau. Shortly thereafter, moved to Honolulu, Hawaii. She adopted the island ways, learning from her large, local extended family and from her small community of German girlfriends who shared her history. She was a military spouse for 21 years and worked in child-care and as a waitress for Dot's in Wahiawa. She is survived by her children, Don (Danuta Bukatko) Sugai, Marilyn (Neil) Mitchell, and Diana (Larry) Uchida. Grandchildren, Vanessa (Beau) Brewer and Nicholas Sugai. Great-grandchild, Kaia Brewer. She is also survived by sisters, Margret Erker, Helly Eppert, and Christel (Reiner) Pribrsky, all residing in Germany. Anna will be reunited with her husband, Gilbert, at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Punchbowl on Thursday, March 2, 2017 at 10:30 a.m.
