Hanako “Hankie” Kuniyoshi
82, February 2, 2017 Hanako "Hankie" Kuniyoshi was born on May 10, 1934 in Waihee Maui. She was the fourth child of six born to Gensuke and Tomi Nakama. A graduate of Roosevelt High School and the University of Hawaii at Manoa, she began her teaching career at Kunia Elementary and finished her teaching career at Kauluwela Elementary. Hankie loved life and enjoyed traveling, golfing with her Ke Anuenue club friends, baking, and creating floral arrangements. She loved playing poker and all night mahjong marathons with her BFFs. Most of all, she cherished her time with her grandkids. Everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her was touched by her kindness and generosity. Hankie is survived by: daughter Julie Kuniyoshi (Nathan Haraguchi); son Jon Kuniyoshi; son Todd Kuniyoshi (Maria Chun); three grandchildren (Sami, Evan, and Emma); brother Takeo Nakama; four sisters (Karen Hamada, Toyoko Kaumeheiwa, Yukiko Joyce Takara, and Diana Hirohata). She was preceded in death by her husband Shinki Kuniyoshi. Services were held at Nuuanu Congregational Church. Her family is very grateful for all the love and support from family and friends. Requests have been made regarding donations in her memory. Donations can be made to the Hankie and Shinki Kuniyoshi Memorial Scholarship at the John A. Burns School of Medicine.
