Sr. Mary Dolorine Pires, SS.CC
SR. MARY DOLORINE PIRES, SS.CC. On the morning of Sunday, April 30, 2017, Sr. Mary Dolorine Pires, SS.CC. went peacefully home to God. She was 96 years old and 73 years professed as a Sister of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. Sr. Mary Dolorine was born in Paia, Maui on July 8, 1920, her parents were Frank Medeiros Pires and Mary Carvalho Pires. Educated at St. Anthony School in Wailuku and Maui High for one year before transferring to Sacred Hearts Academy in Honolulu, Hawaii where she graduated in 1940. She entered the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary on August 22, 1942. Sr. Mary Dolorine began teaching at Sacred Hearts Convent and then at Sacred Hearts Academy. Later, she furthered her education at Chaminade University, St. Louis University in Missouri where she earned her PhD in Literature. In 1970, she was missioned in Rome where she taught at the John Cabot International School and the American University of Rome. She took courses at the Gregoriana in Rome and received a diploma from Vincent Palotti Institute in Rome. Teaching was always a great love of Sr. Mary Dolorine and she excelled in sharing knowledge with students, faculty and especially with the Brother novices of the Sacred Hearts whom she continued to teach up until her stroke on January 7, 2017. She is survived by her sister, Julie Tom; her nephew, Fr. Patrick Freitas and nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be on Saturday, May 20, 2017 at Sacred Hearts Academy chapel. Public viewing with Rosary at 9:00 a.m., Funeral Mass at 12 noon, followed by burial at Hawaiian Memorial Park at 2:00 p.m. Arrangements Provided By: NUUANU MEMORIAL PARK & MORTUARY LLC
