Father Herbert Ching, passed away in Honolulu May 2, 2017. He was born in Honolulu on January 5, 1921. He graduated from St. Louis High School in 1939, and St. Joseph College and St. Patrick Seminary in California. He was ordained in Hawaii by Bishop James J. Sweeney on June 21, 1947 and was the first Chinese Priest to be ordained in Hawaii. He is survived by a brother Philip Ching of Honolulu and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 31 at the Basilica Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace on Fort Street Mall followed by Mass at 9:30 a.m. Reception will follow at 11:30 a.m. at the Empress Restaurant, 100 N Beretania Street, Chinese Cultural Plaza. Graveside Service will be at 3:00 p.m. at Hawaiian Memorial Park Cemetery, Kaneohe, Oahu. No flowers please. Donations may be made to the Roman Catholic Diocese in Hawaii, 1184 Bishop Street, Honolulu, Hawaii 96813.
