RICHARD BRUCE JOSEPH “BRUCE”
RICHARD BRUCE JOSEPH BRUCE Richard Bruce Joseph "Bruce", 87, died on his birthday, May 7, 2017 in his Kailua home. His intelligence and quiet wit are hugely missed. He was an excellent and long-time ear nose and throat doctor and surgeon, husband, father, grandfather, a solid tennis player, bridge player, world traveler and avid reader. Bruce loved to laugh with his family and friends and was always entertaining to be with. Bruce was born on May 7, 1930 in Whitewater, Kansas, the son of Donald Burdett and Florence Fuqua Joseph. He was a graduate of Whitewater High school and a 1951 graduate of the University of Kansas, where he was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to study French literature and history. Bruce married Janet Padgett on September 19, 1952, after which together they took a train to New York and sailed to Europe on "The Queen Mary" for a year in France. Bruce graduated from the University of Kansas Medical School, after which he did his internship in Tripler Army Hospital in Hawaii and ENT residency in Iowa. Bruce is survived by Janet, his wife of 64 years, and children; Kimberly Joseph Zilis, husband Paul Zilis, and Gary Allen Joseph, wife Yunah Lee Joseph; and grandchildren Gregory and David Zilis and Kailee Joseph. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Howard F. Joseph and twin sisters Joan "Jan" Williams of Lawrence, Kansas and Virginia "Ginnie" Hilbe of Schaan, Liechtenstein. Bruce and his family want to extend their sincerest thanks to Island Hospice, the network of caregivers during Bruce's last days, and our neighbors, who have been an invaluable source of warmth and support over the years.
Our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased
