Dorothy Toyoko Miyamoto
Dorothy Toyoko Miyamoto99, was born in Honolulu on January 7, 1918, to Toyosuke (Jimmy) and Hideyo Okumura. She died in the early morning of May 26, 2017. The Okumura family included Dorothy's brothers, Jack and George; and sisters, Mae and Fumi. The family was relocated to the Tule Lake, California, Relocation Camp during World War II, from June 23, 1942 to August 5, 1943. Dorothy and her husband, the late Dr. Robert Mitsuo Miyamoto of Hilo, Hawaii, were married on September 2, 1943, in Cook County, Illinois. They lived in Joliet, Illinois and moved to Hilo, Hawaii in 1947, upon Dr. Miyamoto's completion of residency at St. Joseph's Hospital. Dorothy was active in the Hilo Memorial Hospital's Auxiliary and the Waiakea Lions Club Auxiliary. She passed her extensive seamstress knowledge on to a generation of young women. A talented artist and creative cook, she was a dedicated and loving wife and mother. She moved into Olaloa Retirement Community in Mililani Town, her last residence. She is survived by sister, Fumi Nakata; two sons, Craig (Diana, ne'e Ueda) of Honolulu and Dr. Eric (Debra, ne'e Drew) of Dana Point, California; three daughters, Dayle (Larry) Osborn, Audrey (Clifford) Nakaoka, and Karen (Dr. Warren) Ono, all of Honolulu; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Private family services will be held in Hilo at a later date. Per Mrs. Miyamoto's wishes, the family has requested no koden (monetary offerings) be given.
