72 of Fort Mill, SC, passed away on July 5, 2017. He was born in Waipahu on December 17, 1944 and graduated from Leilehua High School. Upon earning a BS degree in Marketing/Transportation at the University of Oregon, he entered the US Army Officer Candidate School. He was commissioned in June 1967 as Quartermaster 2nd LT. He rose to the rank of Captain from 1966-1970, and earned a Bronze Star in Vietnam. His career included administrative positions at Sealand, CSX, and Maersk. He is credited with innovations such as developing software that improved worldwide tracking of containers on ships and helping to develop the extended containers in use today. Steve was predeceased by wife Sue (Scheiffler) Kawakami and is survived by daughters Shelly Danucci (Joe), Stacey Kawakami (Michael Soules), wife Donna Newlands, mother Barbara Kawakami, sister Fay Toyama (Ivan), brother Gary (Brigitte), and extended nephews, nieces and relatives. Private services held. No flowers please.
