FLORENCE J. CHINN LOUI, MD
Florence J. Chinn Loui, MD was born March 29, 1927 in Sacramento, California to Ned and Leong See Chinn. "Popo" passed away September 20, 2017 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Dr. Chinn was a pioneering Chinese female doctor who overcame humble beginnings, gender prejudice, cultural limitations, and racial discrimination. She graduated from CK McClatchy High School in Sacramento (highest honors), Kui Wah Chinese Language School (valedictorian), Sacramento Junior College (great distinction), UC Berkeley (honors), and the Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania. She earned the Professor of Medicine Award as the outstanding senior medical student. In her internship year at Sacramento County Hospital, she was the only female of 40 doctors. She finished her training at the prestigious University of Pennsylvania Internal Medicine program. Dr. Chinn made vital contributions to women's health in Hawaii. She worked for the American Cancer Society as the Screening Education Coordinator for their "Butterfly Bus" which provided mobile cancer screening in rural areas and neighbor islands. Later, she worked as a Medical Consultant for the State of Hawaii's Health and Human Services Department. She won a national award for her program to fight fraud and abuse, saving millions for the state of Hawaii. As a woman's advocate, she served on a State of Hawaii commission, coordinating council, and task force on domestic violence prevention starting in 1995. She was the editor of a special issue of the Hawaii Medical Journal on domestic violence in 1996. She is survived by sons Michael (Cindy), Warren (Rose), William (Sheree), Ronald (Melissa), eight grandsons, and two grand- daughters. Her sister, Carolyn (Paul), a brother, Holland (Nellie), and two sisters in laws survive her. Her son Terry, her brothers Allen (Lil), Leland (Berti), Franklin (Lily), and Gallant predeceased her. Her services will be held on 10/28/2017, 11:00 AM at Mystic Rose Oratory chapel, Chaminade University in Honolulu, HI and on 11/12/2017, 10:00 AM at Masonic Lawn Cemetery in Sacramento, CA.
