Lawrence Chaves Cabrinha graduated from St Louis High School in 1953. In 1954, he joined the US Air Force and was accepted into the Undergraduate Pilot Training program as an Aviation Cadet and started Pre-Flight Training at Lackland Air Force Base later that year. He graduated from Williams Air Force Base as a pilot and a Second Lieutenant in 1955. On July 4, 1955, he married the former Ruth Calistro and began their wonderful life together. Lieutenant Cabrinha, with his new wife in tow, then reported to Strategic Air Command as a B-47 pilot with the 98th Bomb Wing at Lincoln Air Force Base, Nebraska. He served with the 98th Bomb Wing for four years and was discharged from the US Air Force in 1959. He then was hired by Aloha Airlines as a pilot. In the years to come, he served the company as pilot on the line, an Instructor pilot, Chief Pilot, Director of Operations and was then selected to serve as the President of Aloha Island Air. He improved operations and efficiency and was responsible for many positive actions taken within the company. Concurrently, he joined the Hawaii Air National Guard in 1960 and was assigned as a fighter pilot in the 199th Fighter Squadron where he flew the F-102A, the F-4C and the F-15 Eagle. In 1969, He volunteered for service in Vietnam during the Vietnam War as a pilot assigned to the 64th Fighter Squadron and served from bases in Vietnam and Thailand. In 1978, he was selected as Commander of the 199th Fighter Squadron where he, his pilots and Weapon System operators, participated in many deployments and made tremendous improvements to their combat capability. He was then selected to serve as the Director of Operations for the Hawaii Air National Guard where he worked with the staff in developing a strategic plan for the unit that incorporated new missions and roles for the Hawaii Air National Guard that are in existence today. He retired from the Hawaii Air National Guard in 1995. In his earlier years, he enjoyed motorcycling, golfing, fishing, racquetball and was an avid reader. Cabby, as he was affectionately called, was an outstanding military and civilian leader. Quiet, but effective, and someone who was liked by everyone. He was good at his job, a loving husband and a great role model for his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife Ruth Ann, children Debra Stephenson, Monica (Jacob) Cobb-Adams , David (Peggy) Cabrinha and Peter (Lisa) Cabrinha , 12 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Services will be held on Monday, October 30, 2017 at Saint Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Kailua. Visitation: 9:30 a.m.; Mass: 10:30 a.m.
