02/25/25 - 11/07/17 Albert was born in Hauula, Hawaii, the seventh of eight children born to Ham Na Lee and Eui Sik Minn. He attended elementary school in Wahiawa. When the family bought a home in Kaimuki, he attended Kaimuki Intermediate School, played barefoot football at Crane Park and was attracted to ocean sports at Kuhio Beach. He loved being a "Beach Boy", diving for coins when luxury liners came into Honolulu harbor, taking tourists surfing and on outrigger canoe rides, weaving coconut hats, and singing Hawaiian songs. Albert attended Iolani School and McKinley High School playing football at both schools. After graduating from McKinley in 1944, he served in the army for two years. In the summer of 1947 he attended the American Red Cross Aquatic School in Oregon to be certified as a lifeguard and swim instructor. He attended Willamette University in Salem, Oregon, graduating in 1951. Albert taught and coached at Kapaa and Farrington high schools, was Athletic Director at Kaimuki High School, and principal at Jarrett Intermediate, Roosevelt and Kailua High Schools. In the summer of 1954, Albert directed Windward YMCA's first Summer Fun Program. Parents were so pleased with the program that they asked him if they recruited 25 boys would he run a private boys day camp. Al Minn's Fun Camp was born! Al Minn's Fun Camp ran from 1955 - 1985. 1956 - 1957: Albert attended the University of Oregon and received a MED degree with a major in Educational Administration and Curriculum Development. In 1957 Aulea was founded. Albert served as head coach until 2003. "Parents join the club expecting to help where needed; children benefit''. Beginning in 1972 Aulea swimmers began competing in national swim meets. 1975 - 2003: Member of American Swim Coaches Association and recognized as a level 5 coach, the highest rating for a swim coach. Each year from 1975 to 2003 Minn was recognized for excellence in swim coaching. 1974 -1987: Head coach, University of Hawaii Women's Swim Team. 1986: Coached the University of Hawaii Women's Swim Team to the 1986 Pacific Coast Athletic Association Championship title. Minn was the head coach of the first University of Hawaii team to win a conference championship. Coach Albert Minn was named Coach-of-the-Year at the Swimming and Diving Championships held at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. In 1978, 1980, 1981 and 1986 Albert Minn traveled as an assistant coach of National swim teams to Holland, France, Honolulu, New Zealand, Houston and Moscow. Albert Minn is survived by his wife, Shirley; daughters Donna (Gary) McCutcheon, Shelley (David) Moore and Mele (Bill) Tatton; hanai daughter; June Ford; son Albert Allen (Cynthia) Minn; brother Herbert; 10 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. ~ Private Services to be held ~
