91 of Honolulu died peacefully on August 1, 2017. Born Kiyoshi Oi on September 20, 1925, he attended McKinley High School, and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1945, just prior to the end of World War II. He served with the occupation force in Japan and was in the Military Intelligence Service. In 1951, he received a Bachelor's degree in Economics from the University of Hawaii, married Hazel Kimiyo Tatsuguchi of Hauula, and entered active duty as a 2nd Lieutenant. He added the name Oliver in 1953 and was a career Army officer, serving during the Korean and Vietnam wars. Oliver retired from the Army as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1969, but he continued to work in the intelligence community for the federal government for 21 years, mainly in Maryland. Upon his second retirement in 1990, he moved back home to Honolulu. In addition to being a caring husband, father, and grandfather, he enjoyed music and was an avid golfer. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Hazel, and survived by sons, Wendell (Susan) Oi of Honolulu, David (Faith) Oi of Gainesville, Florida; daughters, Carol (Charles) Meek of Kilauea, Kauai, Christine (Edwin) Kise of Kohala, Hawaii; 7 grand- children; and brother (Tsutomu Oi) of Honolulu. Memorial service will be held on Thursday, December 28, 2017 at Hosoi Garden Mortuary. Visitation at 10am, Service at 11am. Interment to follow at Punchbowl National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
