Mehrtens G. ChillingworthPassed away on November 29 in Honolulu at the age of 90. "Mert" was Mr. A.L.O.H.A. to the Chillingworth Ohana, professional colleagues, and all that met him along the way. He was always smiling, laughing and full of love. Mert was the fourth child of Robert and Ethel Chillingworth born on August 1st, 1927 in Honolulu. After attending Roosevelt High School, Mert went on to graduate from Duke University in North Carolina. He then headed to Labrador where he was a second lieutenant in the transportation corps of the US Army. Mert began his insurance career at Allstate, followed by his association with First Insurance Co. of Hawaii. He then formed a partnership with Warren Ackerman, known as Ackerman Chillingworth. In 1973 their firm was acquired by Marsh & McLennan where Mert became manager, specializing in the bonding of companies until his retirement in 1992. Mert served on the boards of Honolulu Federal Savings and Loan, Long and Malone, Honsador, and the Honolulu Board of Underwriters. Sports were Mert's principal recreation. He held season tickets to the UH Warrior football team where he was an avid supporter for decades. He was a member of the Pacific Club where he held champion titles in paddle tennis. But his first love was golf. As a member of Oahu Country Club for over 50 years he organized the first member-Guest tournament and was club president in 1997-98. He was most proud of his scorecard and trophy for his hole-in-one in 1982. Mert was preceded in death by his first wife Janet, their son Robert and his sister Maris Gray. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Lenore, his daughter Susy Ruddle (Francis), grandson William Morgan (Lara), great-grandchildren, Grace and James. He is also survived by step daughters Karen and Cindy Knight, step grandsons Rick (Chelsea) and Chuck Roslof, sister, Phyllis Garrett, brother Sherwood Chillingworth and numerous beloved nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held on Friday January 5, 2018 at Atherton Chapel, Central Union Church. 9am visitation followed by 10am service.
