FAMILY PLACED OBITUARY

Madeline Cahoon
Mere words can't describe the effect Madeline Cahoon had on our lives. Born the first of six in Rhode Island, she married Daniel V. Cahoon and made her way to the place she grew to love the most, Hawaii. After 55 years in paradise, she passed away September 4, 2017, and is now reunited with her beloved Dan at Punchbowl National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. Madeline is survived by her daughter Dana and son Rory (Anita). A generous and doting Grammy, her grandsons Ian (Betsy) and Alex (Jonilyn), miss her very much. Great-granddaughters Ivy Alice, Riley Maria, Emilia Madeline, and Olivia Mary would have loved knowing her. Madeline leaves her sister Lee and brother Doug as well, along with dear sisters-in-law Joan and Elisabeth, and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Harvey, Trevor, and David. Madeline was an enlightened intellectual and a lifelong feisty and energetic feminist -- not to mention a classical music aficionado, voracious reader, fine art lover, traveler, and foreign film maven. She loved all things New York City, cats, and Frank Sinatra. A proud graduate of the University of Hawaii-Manoa, Madeline engaged the finest minds on politics, history, economics, and law. As a high school social studies and law education teacher she was fiercely dedicated, thorough, and passionate. Kailua High School alumni often recognized Madeline as their favorite teacher, years after sitting in her classroom. Most of all, her immediate and extended family remember Madeline as a caring and diligent wife, mother, grandmother, and sister throughout her long life. The family is grateful to the management and staff at Gaylord's Adult Residential Care Home for the superb care they gave Madeline over the last few years. Contributions in Madeline's name can be made to her favorite organizations: Planned Parenthood (https://www.plannedparenthood.org), Hawaiian Humane Society (https://www.hawaiianhumane.org), Hawaii Public Radio (http://hawaiipublicradio.org), PBS Hawaii https://www.pbshawaii.org), and the Alzheimer's Association (https://www.alz.org/hawaii/).
