101, of Aiea, passed away on December 21, 2017 in Honolulu. The oldest of eight children, she was born in Honolulu, grew up in Palama, and graduated from McKinley High School at age sixteen. She worked at Musashiya and at Pawaa Dry Goods, where she met her future husband, Shizuo Ogawa. In 1941, they married and moved to Nawiliwili, Kauai, where sons Roy, Alan, and Owen were born. Later, they moved to Honolulu, where daughter Gail was born. She actively supported her children in their activities, such as scouting and Japanese dance (odori). The family lived on Vineyard Street, then moved to Aiea in 1958, making long and treasured friendships with neighbors. Employed as a cafeteria worker and baker at Kauluwela Elementary School and at Aiea High School, she retired in 1973 to care for her grandchildren. Setsuko enjoyed a variety of crafts - creating Christmas ornaments, silk flower centerpieces, and Japanese kirigami cards; knitting; crocheting; sewing; and many others - and found great joy in giving away her creations. In 1999, well into her 80s, she surprised all by learning to use a personal computer and an iPad, keeping in touch with family and friends by email for years thereafter. She is survived by children Roy, Owen, and Gail: six grand- children, thirteen great-grand- children; and sister Virginia Horiuchi of Sagamihara, Japan. A private service and burial were held.
