Reynold "Rey" Akau passed away on December 28, 2017, at the age of 87. Rey was born on October 16, 1930, to parents Frank Mercer Akau Sr. and Azalea Wedemeyer Akau. He is preceded in death by siblings, Elmer, Cordelia, Marion (Kahawai), Frank Jr., Betty (Wilson), Eleanor (Chun) and Leonard. Rey spent his entire life living in Kalihi. He attended Kalihi Uka Elementary, Kalakaua Intermediate and Farrington High Schools. During his teen years, Rey was active as an amateur boxer until he went to work at the Libby, McNeil and Libby Cannery. While employed at the Cannery, Rey met the love of his life, Elaine Murakami. Rey and Elaine married on Christmas Day of 1948 and remained together for 69 happy years. In December of 1949, Rey was hired as a Ramp Serviceman in the Maintenance Division, for Trans-Pacific Airlines, later known as Aloha Airlines. As a Ramp Serviceman, his main duty was to fuel aircraft for timely departure. In 1989, after 40 years, Rey retired from Aloha Airlines and at that time was the longest tenured airline employee. Besides boxing, Rey also became passionate about his bowling, where he proved to be a serious competitor. During his off time, Rey spent many personal hours perfecting his game which often contributed to the financial support of his family and eventually resulted in multiple 300 games. In 1984, Rey and Elaine opened the V's Bowling Pro Shop on North King Street; later in the Stadium Bowl-O-Drome and finally in the Fort Shafter Bowling Center. In 1986, Rey launched the V's Bowling Pro Shop Tournament in Las Vegas. This tournament was an annual event which ran for over 30 years. In 2010, Rey was inducted into the Oahu Bowling Associations Hall of Fame. Rey is survived by wife Elaine and their children: Florence Ferreira, Reyjean Akau, Reynold Dwight Akau (Debra), Reynette Oakes (John), Bryan Akau, Scott Akau (Laurie); Rey is also survived by brother Clarence (Abigail); 16 Grandchildren, 20 Great-Grand- children, 1 Great, Great Grandchild. Funeral Service will be held at: The Hawaiian Memorial Cemetary, Kaneohe, on Saturday, March 3, 2018.
