Anthony “Tony” Michael Lenzer, PhD
Anthony Tony died on February 8, 2018 in Honolulu at the age of 88. He was born December 19, 1929 in New York. He was married to Joan Linn Lenzer (deceased) for 63 years. He graduated from Long Beach High (NY), Antioch College (OH), and The University of Michigan where he received a PhD in Sociology. His life long interest and career has centered about the study of aging. Tony moved to Hawaii with his family in 1969 to establish the Gerontology Program at the University of Hawaii's School of Public Health, and support aging research and teaching at UH Manoa. He was the first director of the UH Center on Aging from 1988-93. During that time he served as executive producer of the multi-award winning TV series "Growing Old in a New Age." Among his accomplishments, Tony helped create Hospice Hawaii. He was the first president of the Hawaii Pacific Gerontological Society (HPGS). He retired in 1994 Professor Emeritus. However continued teaching until last December at the UH, focusing on end of life issues. Recently Dr. Lenzer was honored by the HPGS for his many contributions to the field of aging, and for his work with Kokua Council, the Policy Advisory Board for Elder Affairs, the Hawaii Family Caregiver Coalition, and the Hawaii Alliance for Retired Americans. Tony was also a very active participant in the bass section of the Windward Choral Society and Temple Emanu-el High Holiday Chorus. He is survived by children: Sara Lenzer Medeiros (Daniel), Margaret Lenzer, David Lenzer, Elizabeth Lenzer, Andrew Lenzer (Margaret), by four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
