September 14, 1924 - January 7, 2018 Passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family. Born at home in Waikiki to Mary and Adam Ornelles, Axel grew up in Waikiki enjoying the surf and sea. He was a 1942 graduate of St. Louis School. Axel was a WWII Army veteran, serving in Europe as a field artillery observer and present for the Dachau concentration camp liberation. After the war, he went to the University of Hawaii and on to Stanford Law School, graduating in 1952 alongside Supreme Court Justices William Rehnquist and Sandra Day O'Connor. He practiced law for many years in both California and Hawaii. Axel was a successful real estate developer, providing affordable homes on Oahu and Maui. He started with a small apartment building in Kapahulu, then on to condominiums in Waikiki and Kihei. He also developed an affordable housing project in the Salt Lake area. He was instrumental in assisting Mayor Frank Fasi obtain funding for the Hale Pauahi project in Chinatown. Many other ventures fulfilled his life. Axel was predeceased by his parents, Mary and Adam Ornelles; brother, Emory Ornelles; and son, Eric Ornelles. Axel is survived by his wife of 62 years, Gerry Ornelles; son, Richard (Danny Stumpf); daughters, Laura and Linda; daughter-in-law Toni Ornelles; grandchildren Brittany and Lia Genovia, Leif and Ryan Ornelles; and one great-granddaughter, Anale'a Akiona; brothers, Drs. Gordon & Dermot Ornelles; sisters, Eloise Wilson & Brenda Waters; and many nieces and nephews. He enjoyed reading, traveling, and loved sports. Two of his favorites were baseball and boxing, and was a member of the Hawaii Boxing Commission. He was a longtime member at the Outrigger Canoe Club and Waialae Country Club where he golfed regularly.
