After a long illness Ernest "Ernie" Quevido of Waipahu passed away at home in his sleep a day before his 74th birthday. A Celebration of Ernie's Life will be held at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church on Waimano Home Road, Pearl City, on April 16, 2018, Family viewing starts 8:30 to 9:00am. Public viewing begins at 9:00 to 10:30, Eulogy and Remembrance at 10:30 with Mass at 11:00 am, Lunch to follow in Pastoral Center. Military burial at Mililani Memorial Park at 1:30 pm. Casual attire. It was at this church that Ernie was the 8:00 am choir director for many years and one of the founding members of the Filipino Catholic Club at OLGC. He was also a member of the Cursillo Movement of Hawaii serving in several weekend retreats. Ernie graduated from Radford High School and Honolulu Business College before enlisting in the US Air Force for four years of which, the last year, he served in Da Nang, Vietnam. Ernie began his marine ships repair career nearly 32 years ago as a Marine Machinery Mechanic Apprentice from 1969 to 1973 in Shop 38. Thereafter, gaining much valuable shipboard experience on surface ships and submarines he was promoted to Planner and Estimator. After his first retirement from Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard he worked with Life Cycle Engineering based in San Diego for the past 12 years as a part-time estimator/planner and engineering technician. Ernie is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife, Cathy Lagon, sons Andrew (Susan), Jarod and Joseph (Penny); daughters Noelle Quevido and Marisa Fuentes. As the eldest of eight children he helped his parents Ernesto and Florence, now deceased, take care of of them in Halawa Housing where the Aloha Stadium now stands and in Aiea town. Siblings are brothers Alan (Mary) of Ewa Beach and Gary of Las Vegas; sisters Nina Burkert and Ivy Abafo of CA, Rita Newcom, Charlotte (Troy) Pagaduan and Lorene (Timmy) Alexander; ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren; an only Uncle, Johnny Suguitan, cousins, and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides working all his life, Ernie loved the outdoors and enjoyed deer hunting on his favorite island of Lana`i and belonged to the Lana`i Hunters Club. Ernie also loved the beach campouts with church members and families and swimming with the Ala Moana Beach Boys Club. He was a past member of the Universal Kempo Karate Schools and earned a black belt. He was an avid 49ers football fan and enjoyed many Super Bowl gathering at home. He loved listening to Hawaiian and Jazz music and he would play his ukulele and he played by ear. He also loved Karaoke with family and friends. Lastly, Ernie was a terrific cook and taught his sons, especially. His specialties were pork guisantes and pinacbet and a mean beef baron on the electric spigot for special occasions.
