Shizuko, 92, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on March 28. She was born in 1925 in Waipunalei, Hawaii, and grew up in Papaaloa and Pahala. Shizuko moved to Honolulu to attend the University of Hawaii at Manoa, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in bacteriology. Shizuko was a researcher with the University of California and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. She pioneered aseptic rearing of fruit flies and pursued a career in entomology. In her spare time, she bred and cultivated orchids and anthuriums. Shizuko married the love of her life, Wallace (Wally) Mitchell, who adored her right back. Shizuko was a devoted wife, mom, and grandma who was deeply loved and will be greatly missed. She was preceded in death by Wally and is survived by her sister Rae, her daughters Teri, Pamela, and Janyce and her four grand- children. Private service.
