David John Hill, Age 87, passed away at his home in Hawaii Kai surrounded by family on March 26, 2018. David was born May 28, 1930 in Marysville, CA to Clifford and Augusta B. Hill. He attended Yuba Junior College before obtaining a BA from San Jose State University in 1952. He married Dorothy Ann Edinger (Deceased) in 1953. Together they would move to Hawaii in 1954 raising children; Dwight "Skip" and Lori Ann. David assisted with the opening of Canlis Charcoal Broiler Restaurant known as "the most beautiful restaurant in the world" when it opened. He would become General Manager working there for 28 years. Canlis would win a number of Travel Holiday Magazine and Epicurean Awards under his management. He was President of Hill Hawaii Sales which over the years represented products ranging from the manufacture and sale of aloha shirts, Niihau keawe charcoal and silver refinishing. David was dedicated to the Hawaii hospitality industry. He was a past President of the Waikiki Jaycees in 1968-69 when it would launch the Jet Age Fair to introduce the people of Hawaii to a new era in the development of the visitor industry. He was President of the Hawaii Restaurant Association in 1973-74 and was honored as an inaugural inductee to The HRA Hall of Fame in 2007. Over the years he was active with the Hawaii Hotel Association, the Hawaii Visitors Bureau and an early supporter of the Travel Industry Management (TIM) School of the University of Hawaii. David was passionate about food and wine. He was a member of the Marching and Chowder Society, The International Wine and Food Society - Hawaii Chapter and the JMD Wine and Food Society. After his days at Canlis he was a partner in Pacific Tennis Courts building and resurfacing Tennis Courts. David was an avid tennis player and member of the Waialae Country Club. Good friend Ed Doty would have him help with the creation of the JMD Wine and Food Educational Center as its director providing instruction in cooking and wine appreciation. David and Dottie enjoyed travel and spending time with their children and grandchildren. He is survived by children Skip (Rondi) Hill and Lori (John) Talbot; grandchildren Ronson Hill, Taylor Talbot and Haley Talbot and nephews Ted, Tim, Dave and Cliff Ernst. Services to celebrate the life of David and Dottie Hill will be held at Mariners Bay Club (800 Lunalilo Home Road) on June 1st, 2018 at 5:30 PM.
