Died peacefully on March 8, 2018. She was born in Watertown, Massachusetts to Lillian MacDonald and Philip Bradford Holmes. Joanne attended Boston University, and during a summer job at Lake Placid she met her future husband, Henry. Adventuring away from Boston, she arrived in the territory of Hawaii in 1954. There she and Henry raised three children, Lauren, Lydia, and Todd. Joanne lived a life of adventure, travel, and philanthropy. She twice traveled to Antarctica, sailed around Cape Horn, swam across the equator in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, and boated up the Amazon River. She was a supporter of the arts, education, I.H.S., and a member of the Garden Club of Honolulu for many years. She is survived by her three children, a son-in-law, a daughter-in-law, and five grandchildren. Her final contribution was to science. She willed her body to the University of Hawaii Medical School.
Our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased
