Gerhard Frohlich
Gerhard FrohlichPassed away peacefully at age 78 on May 14, 2018. Gerhard was born in Halberstadt, Germany. His family immigrated to the United States, settling in Iowa when he was 17 years old. He received his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. He joined the University of Hawaii Department of European Languages after his graduation as an assistant professor. He spoke German and French. After several years at the University of Hawaii, he decided to enter law school at the University of California at Berkeley, Boalt Hall. Gerhard returned to Hawaii and entered private practice. In 1983 he joined the Damon Key Kupchuk Law Firm, making partner a few years later. For the last 15 years of his career in law he concentrated on Immigration Law. He became one of the top Immigration attorneys in Hawaii. He was an all around sports man. At a young age in Germany, he was a part of the gymnastic team for his family church. He enjoyed sailing, skiing, ice skating, diving, rock climbing, hang gliding, roller blading, golfing, and was a three time Honolulu marathon runner. But many of his friends remember him as a tennis player. He belonged to a HTPA league and his team went to compete nationally on the mainland several times to represent Hawaii. In the year 2008 the team won a National Championship title. Gerhard is survived by his wife, Hisako Frohlich, a daughter, Ingrid Cherry, and a granddaughter, Isabella Maurtua. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. Friday May 25, 2018, at the Oahu Country Club.
