James Lewis Mara
James Lewis Mara, a resident of San Luis Obispo since 1970, died on May 21, 2018 in San Luis Obispo, California. He was buried next to his parents at the Oahu Cemetery in Honolulu, Hawaii. James was born in 1927 in Honolulu. He graduated from Maryknoll High School in 1945. He served 3 years in the US Army Air Force in Erding, Germany. He graduated from the University of Hawaii in 1952 and continued his studies under the GI Bill at the Sorbonne in Paris, France during 1953-1954. He joined the Social Security Administration in Santa Rosa, CA in 1957 as a Claims Examiner. He spent 10 years in Alaska and one year in Spokane, WA. He was promoted to District Manager in Juneau, Alaska in 1969. He transferred as District Manager to San Luis Obispo in January 1970. He retired from the SSA in May of 1984. He was an avid world traveler and enjoyed jogging, swimming, reading, music, and sports. Survivors include a niece, Cathy Haynes, of Reedsport, Oregon and her family. Mr. Mara's family would like to invite family and friends to join them on August 18, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. for a graveside Memorial at Oahu Cemetery, 2162 Nuuanu Avenue, Honolulu ~ Follow the lower road to the green canopy ~
