SHIZUKO KOHATSU MUKAIDA
SHIZUKO KOHATSU MUKAIDAJuly 28, 1918 - August 28, 2018 Shizuko Mukaida passed away peacefully with her grandchildren at her bedside on August 28, 2018, a month after celebrating her 100th birthday. Shizuko was born in Paia, Maui, to Dr. and Mrs. Yukihide Kohatsu, and was the eldest of five sisters and a brother. She grew up in Honolulu, and lived for several years in Japan where she received her diploma from the Musashino Academy of Music. She returned to Honolulu and began her long career as a piano teacher and music educator. She was a very active volunteer in her church, professional and community organizations, and received many awards recognizing her years of volunteer service and accomplishments: the Aloha United Way's first Alexis de Tocqueville Society award for outstanding volunteerism (1996); the Church Women United's Valiant Woman Award (2003); the Mayor's Outstanding Woman Volunteer for Oahu (1992), and others. She was predeceased by her husband of fifty-two years, Tomio Mukaida; son Thomas Osamu; and sisters Kuniko Kohatsu and Toshiko Tasaka. She is survived by daughters Carrie and Elna, sons Wayne and Marvin, sisters Grace Kohatsu and Lillian Wakuzawa, brother Shoichi Kohatsu, M.D., grandchildren Thomas, Charles and Alexis, many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. In lieu of flowers and gifts, contributions in her memory may be made to her favorite organizations: the Church of the Crossroads; the Moiliili Community Center; the American Cancer Society Reach to Recovery program; the Salvation Army Adult Day Health Services, or the donor's choice. A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, October 8, 2018, at Church of the Crossroads. Visitation: 3:00 p.m.; Service: 4:00 p.m., with a reception to follow.
