FAMILY PLACED OBITUARY

John Y.C. Chang
Passed away peacefully on September 15, 2018 at the age of 92. Born on January 26, 1926 as one of 9 children, John enjoyed close relationships with each of his siblings. He was a graduate of both UH Manoa and the University of Michigan and served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He retired as Colonel after many years of service in the Army Reserve Corps of Engineers. On September 24, 1955 John married Muriel Yee and together they started a family. John and Muriel were happily married for 43 years and shared a mutual love of travel, often jetting off to experience the world. John enjoyed a long, fulfilling career at the Board of Water Supply as a civil engineer and upon retirement was enticed to continue this work with Mink and Yuen alongside his dear friend John Mink. A life long learner, skilled woodworker and dedicated runner, John enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles, making furniture for loved ones and exercising at the Nu'uanu YMCA well into his senior years. Always one to give back, John volunteered at the Lyon Arboretum and Foster Botanical Gardens. John is survived by his sisters Lena Young, Mary Fong and Pearl Johnson, his daughter and son-in-law Pam and Dwight Fujiwara, his son John Chang (Josie) his grandchildren Christopher Fujiwara and Daisy Chang and his dear companion Hazel Yoshiyama. A quiet man of few but thoughtful words, John remains our shining example of prudence, simplicity and integrity. Thank you dad, for exemplifying what it means to lead a dignified life. Per John's request, a short service will be held at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific on October 29th at 9:30 am at the niche where he will be inurned. No flowers please.

Our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased
