Lesley Kealakai Agard
Lesley Kealakai AgardLesley Kealakai Agard (68), daughter of Louis Kruse ("Buzzy") Agard, Jr. and Irma Ruth Silva Agard, died in Honolulu on September 22, 2018. Born on June 1, 1950, Lesley attended Kamehameha Schools from Kindergarten through high school, graduating in 1968. She attended the University of Hawai`i at Manoa, earning a Bachelor and Master of Arts in English Literature. Lesley joined the staff at Kamehameha Schools in 1972 and began a long career in writing, editing, and publishing. She contributed to many Kamehameha publications including newsletters (Ka Mo`i), yearbooks (Ka Na`i Aupuni), books, and flyers. In the early 1980's she spent several years focusing on her family. She continued to write freelance material for Kamehameha as well as the Hawaiian Humane Society. Lesley returned to Kamehameha as Editor in the Public Affairs Department in 1987. She and her classmate and colleague Sharlene Chun-Lum co-authored the book Legacy: A Portrait of the Young Men and Women of Kamehameha Schools 1887 - 1987. (Kamehameha Schools Press). She eventually became Director of Communications and retired from Kamehameha in 2008. Lesley served on numerous community service organizations and boards, including Hui Hanai of Queen Liliu`okalani Trust, the O`ahu Cemetery Board of Directors, and the Planning Group for the Hawai`i Children's Discovery Center. She helped create the "Fantasies in Chocolate" benefit for the Hawaiian Humane Society, and the annual Children's Literature Hawai`i Conference. All who knew Lesley considered her kind, considerate, smart, and beautiful, inside and out. She loved her family, her friends, animals, chocolate, and the beach on the North Shore. She loved reading and learning, and always had a book with her. She loved the Wyllie Street house where she grew up with her grandmother. She loved her community, Kamehameha Schools, and Hawai`i nei. She was a woman of quiet strength and peace. Lesley was predeceased by her mother, Irma Ruth Silva Agard and father, Louis Kruse "Buzzy" Agard, Jr. She is survived by her husband, Ormond Hammond, brother Louis K. Agard III (Carol), stepdaughter Samantha Hammond (Antoine Verin), daughter Kealakai Hammond (Chris Trujillo), and grandchildren Amaru and Nazca Trujillo. A Celebration of Lesley's life will be held at O`ahu Cemetery Chapel, 2162 Nu`uanu Avenue, on November 10, 2018. Visitation at 10:00 am. Services beginning at 11:00 am. Refreshments to follow.
