It is with great sadness that the family of Victor Nobuo Kobayashi, 85, announces his passing on Tuesday, October 2, 2018 in New York, NY. Victor was born on November 11, 1932 on Maui and served in the Air Force from 1954 to 1957. He obtained both his bachelor's and master's degree in education from the University of Hawaii and in 1963, married the love of his life, Cleo Milliman Kobayashi. Victor completed his Ph.D. in Philosophy of Education and Comparative Education at the University of Michigan in 1964. He was Professor Emeritus of Educational Foundations at the University of Hawai'i Manoa, where he served several terms as Chair for the Department and as Head of International Education for the College of Education. His devotion to the field of education led him to become the Dean of Summer Session and was merged with the College of Continuing Education. Professor Kobayashi was also one of the founders of the Hawaii International Film Festival and led the project to restore Krauss Hall, a historical building on the University of Hawaii campus that houses the John Young Museum of Art. He continued to write and publish, as well as serve on many educational and art organizations throughout his life. Victor was also a dedicated artist who loved to create ceramics, collages, and mosaics and had a passion for baking and gardening, all of which were a source of constant joy to his family, friends, and community. Sadly, Victor lost his wife, Cleo, on May 4, 2017. Victor is survived by sons, Peter N. Kobayashi of Honolulu, Jay C. Kobayashi (Frances Remos) of Phoenix, Arizona area; daughter, Sarah M. Kobayashi (Stacey Quinealty) of Burbank, California; grandchildren, Brian, Nicole, Gabrielle, Mason, Kaipo, and Tracey N. Quinealty and great-grandchildren, Leilani and Meliah. Much aloha is also extended to families of his only sister, the late Constance (Benjamin) Yamamoto and four (late) brothers, Dr. Clifford Kotaro Kobayashi (Catherine), Harry Nobuto Kobayashi (Mabel) of Maui, Buddy Mitsuo (Ruth) and Lawrence Hisato of Kauai. Victor's ohana also includes the family of Roy and Mary Cocker Akina, of Pocatello, Idaho. A memorial service has been scheduled for November 12, with visitation at 5 pm and services at 6 pm at Hosoi Mortuary. Arrangements Provided By: Hosoi Garden Mortuary
