Playwright, traveler, humanist, family historian, Beloved Uncle and Treasured friend, died September 1, 2018 while swimming laps in his Honolulu apartment pool. He was 87 years old. Dick lived a thoughtful and adventurous life. He leaves behind nieces, nephews and a clutch of close friends in Hawaii and elsewhere. He will be deeply missed by all of us. Richard Goodman was born in Bryn Mawr, PA, graduated from Staples High School in Westport CT, received a BA from Bowdoin College and a MA from Columbia University. After serving in Korea, Dick lived in Japan before living in San Francisco and Hawaii. Often known as Richard by his friends, Dick taught English at the University of Hawaii and collaborated with the TAG Theater as a playwright and actor. His plays ran the gamut of drama to comedy including a recent musical, Eureka!, about a Shakespearean acting troupe during the California Gold Rush. His plays were produced in several U.S. locations and portrayed a variety of characters including ghosts, gold miners, travelers on a steam ship and residents of a nursing home. But his most popular plays were serious dramas about a misunderstood president's wife in The Insanity Case of Mrs. Lincoln and courageous abolitionists in, Resistance! He fostered the creative spirit in all his relationships and was loved for his personal support to that end. A Memorial service Celebrating his Life will be held in Honolulu on Saturday, December 8th at the Brad Powell Theater at the Dole Cannery from 2:30 - 4:30 p.m. He will be laid to rest on December 9th at 10:30 a.m. at Diamond Head Memorial Park.
