James Shigeo Wataru
August 27,1923 - November 20, 2018 James Shigeo Wataru, 95, known affectionately to his family and friends as "Shige" or "Jim", passed away on November 20, 2018. He was born on the island of Kauai. A graduate of Waimea High School, Class of 1941, he enlisted in the Army in 1945, where he served as a rifleman. Upon his honorable discharge in 1946 he moved to Chicago, where in 1963 he met Mary Ann "Miki" McHale. They married in June of 1964 and had 3 children. They lived in Chicago until 1975, then moved the family to Hawaii. Jim worked as a bar manager at the Hale Koa hotel until his retirement in 2000 at the age of 77. He is survived by his 3 children: Karen Wataru Nakaoka, James Wataru, Jr., Connie Chinen and 7 grandchildren: Jonah, Camryn, Justus, Josiah, Chloe, Jedidiah & Joseph. Shige was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann Wataru. A Celebration of his Life will be held on Monday, December 17th at Borthwick Mortuary. Visitation: 4:30 p.m.; Services: 5:30 p.m. Burial will be held at a later date at the Hawaii State Veterans Cemetery, Kaneohe.
