95, born September 25, 1923 in Hilo Hawaii, passed quietly on November 28, 2018 at her home in Honolulu. The third child of John and Julia (Pokini) Fernandez, she has 8 siblings: Bernice, Boyson, Earl, Renald, Richard, Kilohiwai, Marvis, and Merna. A Hilo High class of 1941 graduate, Elaine married Joseph (Buddy) Mattson and had 9 children: Joseph, Russell, David, Renard, Val, Charles, Lance, Ululani, and Norma, 18 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, and 16 great great grandchildren. Elaine retired from Hawaii State Library's main branch. A faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she enjoyed researching genealogy, serving in church, and singing in the choir. She was frequently complimented on her lovely white hair and radiant smile. People remember her thumbprint cookies, butter mochi, and award winning lemon meringue pie. Elaine will be deeply missed. Funeral Wednesday, December 19, 2018 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 623 Judd Street. Viewing: 9 am; Services: 11 am.; Burial:1 pm at Punchbowl. Repast 2 pm, at church. Family requests no flowers.
