FAMILY PLACED OBITUARY

Elaine Sumiko Sakai
Elaine Sumiko Sakai77, of Honolulu passed away peacefully on December 3, 2018 at Queen's Medical Center with her family by her side. As the third child of the late Gunji "Henry" and the late Shizuko Fujishige, she grew up in Kakaako on the property of her father's business, Henry Fuji Service Station. A graduate of McKinley High School, she devoted her career to the State of Hawaii for 43 years, of which she proudly served for 41 years in the Unemployment Insurance Division, Department of Labor and Industrial Relations. In 1985, she received the prestigious Governor's Award as Employee of the Year highlighting her leadership in guiding the highly automated Tax Redesign project from inception to implementation. Elaine retired in 2002 to care for her mother and spend time with her grandchildren. A talented woman, Elaine loved to dance the hula, was a steady bon dance participant and even played the accordion in the Chidori Orchestra as a young adult. Elaine was an active board member and officer of the Honolulu Yamaguchi Kenjinkai and Iwakuni Odori Aiko Kai. Elaine loved taking her Mom to Las Vegas and her grandchildren on family vacations. Elaine is survived by husband Raymond, daughters Sherri (Todd) Yoshioka, and Lisa (Jason) Ito, grandchildren Sheena, Justin and Jordan; siblings Ernest (the late Joyce) Fujishige, Nancy (Edward Jr.) Yokoyama and David (Suzanna) Fujishige; and nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Memorial Services will be held at Hosoi Mortuary on Thursday, January 17, 2019. Visitation at 5:00 pm; Services at 6:00 pm. No flowers, please. Arrangements Provided By: Hosoi Garden Mortuary
