Richard Mee Cho Lum
Richard M.C. Lum, 93 of Honolulu, passed away peacefully at Queen's Hospital on January 3, 2019. He was born in Honolulu to the late Yan Chew and Violet Hee Lum. Richard graduated from St. Louis High School, the University of Hawaii-Manoa, and the University of California, Hastings College of Law. He was inducted into the Army in December 15, 1945 as a Supply Non-Commissioned Officer, receiving the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal and World War II Victory Medal. Richard began his career as a Deputy Attorney General for the Territory of Hawaii and became a well-respected Attorney. He was appointed Per Diem Judge, then served as District Court Judge until his retirement in 1996. He was a very active community member, including holding board and officer positions for several organizations, such as the Kiwanis Clubs, the YMCA, the University of Hawaii Alumni Association, the Hawaii Chinese Civic Association, the Bar Association of Hawaii, the American Bar Association, the Lum Sai Ho Tong, the Mun Lun Chinese School, the Chung Shan Association and others. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Susan Young Lum; his children Stanford (Gloria), Janice (Lloyd) Wong, Carlton (Anne), Kenton (Wendy), and Corinne (Lloyd) Hiu, and 7 grandchildren. He is also survived by siblings: Frederick Y.C. Lum, Theresa W.T. Leong, and Gladys W.H. Monroe. A celebration of his life will be held on Tuesday, January 22 at Diamond Head Mortuary.
